Information for Investigators
The Research Review Process
Investigators desiring to perform medical human subject research at Detroit Medical Center (DMC) sites must submit an Application for Research Review and Authorization (Application) through the DMC Research Review website. The DMC will use the information contained in the Application to facilitate research-related agreements with sponsors and to review studies and project budgets for their compliance with State and Federal regulations and DMC Policy. Information contained in the Applications will also be included in a database to assist the DMC in monitoring ongoing research being performed at DMC sites.
Materials to be submitted electronically with the Research Review Application include any Clinical Research Agreements or Site/Service Agreements that are associated with the study, as well as a copy of the proposed protocol. An administrative fee of $500 dollars is due with the Research Review Application. Investigators may request a reduction in or waiver of the fee.
The DMC seeks to assist investigators in expediting the commencement of their studies and expects to complete its review of all proposed studies within thirty (30) days after submission of the Application and associated required materials. In most instances, review will be completed in five (5) to seven (7) days. Only unusually complex contracts may require a full thirty (30) day review period. Upon favorable review of a study by the DMC, a Detroit Medical Center Research Review Authorization letter will be issued to the Investigator.
The Research Review process does not take the place of an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Studies performed at DMC sites that involve human subjects must, as always, be approved by the DMC IRB of record, the Wayne State University Human Investigations Committee (WSU-HIC). Researchers do not need to delay their applications to the WSU-HIC until the DMC has reviewed their studies; they may apply to the WSU-HIC at any time. The WSU-HIC will review an investigator’s protocol, but will not grant final approval of it until DMC Research Review Authorization has been granted.
